EVERY TIME IT RAINS
Mystique Cruise Ship
“I can’t believe he did that!” April exclaimed as she sipped her iced tea.
Kip gazed out of the dining room window, the night seeming endless, but whether it was good or bad, he couldn’t decipher. Danny glanced at Kip, unable to read him.
“Are you all right?” Danny asked Kip.
Kip continued to brood as Danny eyed him. “What happened after he unsuited you?” wondered Danny.
Kip sighed as he took a bite of his steak. “I got Zack to come back in the water and give me a towel. Thankfully he was there. I just hauled my butt back to the ship and I locked myself in the room…I’m cursed.”
April kept quiet at the word ‘curse’. She wanted to forget about everything that damn psychic told her, but it was still ringing through her mind. She wanted nothing but to enjoy her trip, but the idea of something atrocious happening to her in any capacity frightened her.
“April?” Kip repeated for the second time.
She snapped back to reality and gazed at him. “Yeah?”
“I’m going to go back to my room. I’m not feeling that well. Night, guys.” Kip moved back to his room as April squeezed Danny’s hand.
“You’ve been off all night. Are you all right?” Danny pried. “Is it that reading we got today?”
April nodded lightly.
“Hey, she’s a quack. April,” Danny said reassuringly, “Don’t worry about anything that woman said. Nothing bad is going to happen to you. I promise.”
April smiled, hoping she could truly believe what her boyfriend was trying to tell her.
Elise's Apartment
Knock! Knock! Someone was knocking on Elise's door. "Just a minute!" Elise called out, knowing that it was Courtney coming by to see the place.
Elise looked over everything to make sure it was all clean and tidy and made her way to the door.
She opened it and sure enough there was Courtney outside her door. "Courtney!"
"Hey Elise, I'm here. You said I could come see the apartment."
"Of course. Come on in. Check out the apartment for yourself." Elise said moving so Courtney could walk in.
"Thanks." Courtney looked around the place. "Wow, this place is great. You're a great decorator!" Courtney exclaimed, eyeing the beautiful pictures, furniture, and accessories. "I have enough trouble with my own shabby place."
"Would you like something to drink?" Elise offered Courtney.
"Oh no thank you. I'm not thirsty right now."
"Ok well if you want I can show you the bedroom you'll be staying in." Elise said.
"Great, lead me away." Courtney said smiling.
Elise turned and started walking down the hall, Courtney at her heel. "When I first started living here I had intended on making this bedroom a guestroom but I haven't had single guest yet. I'll move everything out of it if you decide to move in here."
"Well from what I've seen so far, get ready to start moving." Courtney said laughing.
Elise opened a door and turned on the light that shone bright on a medium size bedroom. Inside there was already a bed, a dresser, and a mirror but Courtney would have to get her own stuff. Courtney spotted two doors and figured one must be a closet. "What's this other door?"
"The two bedrooms have their own bathrooms so we won't have to share one and fight over who gets it first." Elise said with a huge grin.
Courtney laughed. "Yeah I can imagine how that would be. This is really great. Just what I wanted"
A phone ring from the living area shot through the air. "Oh," Elise said, "If you'll excuse me, this shouldn't take too long."
"Go ahead. I'll just look around some more."
Elise walked back to the living room and Courtney looked around the room some more. This is really great, she thought. Now she wouldn't be embarrassed to have anyone over. She looked outside the door across the hall and noticed another room, the door slightly open on the other side of the hall. It must be Elise's room. She wouldn't mind if I just peeked in and took a look at some of her decorating.
Courtney walked across the hall and into the room. She found the light on the wall and turned it on. Surprisingly, Elise's room wasn't that all decorated. It had a few pictures on the wall, a nicely made bed, a bedside table, and a dresser but nothing like her living room. Courtney walked in further and admired the comforter on her bed.
"What are you doing in here?" A voice from behind Courtney startled her.
Courtney turned around and saw Elise, a curious look on her face.
"This is my bedroom. Your bedroom is across the hall. Why are you in here? I didn't say you could come in here!"
Courtney just stood there, her mouth open wide.
Collins Manor
Kimberly glided down the main staircase in Collins Manor and pulled the front door open. Kimberly sighed with delight as Ken stood in front of her. He gazed back at her, his eyes filled with the kind of passion one finds once in a lifetime.
“Hi!” Kimberly cooed as she pulled the door open. “Come in. I just have to get my purse.”
Ken walked in to the vast Collins foyer and marveled at its sheer beauty. He watched Kimberly disappear into a room, just as a young woman waltzed through the front door. She stopped cold in her footsteps, as she eyed Ken. “Hi,” she muttered.
“Hi. I’m waiting for Kimberly.” Ken stated.
She gave him the once over. “I bet you are. What’s your name?”
“Ken Foster. And you are?”
Parker's face suddenly changed from confusion to happiness. “Parker Collins, Kimberly's younger sister." Parker crossed behind Ken towards the living room. "So your the dashing Ken Foster?”
He grinned. Obviously there had been some chatter about him amongst Kimberly and her sister. "Yeah I guess I am."
"Wow. It's nice to finally meet you. Just between you and me Kenny boy, Kimberly will not shut up about you."
Ken felt himself getting hot as he smiled shyly and looked down at his two feet which were shifting back and forth. Parker was making him nervous.
Parker smiled. "I thought you lived in Miami."
“Parker!” Shouted Kimberly as she emerged with her purse. She gave her sister a small hug. "Have you met Ken?”
"Yes. I was just asking Ken what he was doing in Seattle.
Kimberly looked at Ken and then back at her sister. "Ken surprised me today. He's moving to Seattle."
"Wow!" Parker exclaimed. "I've never had a guy move for me before. You should consider yourself lucky sis."
Kimberly looked at Ken. "Yeah I do." Ken returned the loving gaze as Kimberly grabbed his hand. "Well, we should be going. We have reservations."
"By all means don't let me keep you. Just picking up some things before going to work." Parker explained.
"I'll talk to you tomorrow sis. Have a good show." Kimberly said giving her sister a slight hug.
"Nice to meet you Parker." Ken said offering his hand.
Parker shook hand gently. "Likewise. You two have fun tonight. Don't stay out too late!" She smiled as she warned in a mother like voice.
With that, Parker watched as Ken and Kimberly walked outside and Parker wondered if maybe this time, Kimberly might get it right.
Mystique Cruise Ship
Kip walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower until the water was how he liked it. He slowly stepped into the shower and let the water trickle all over him. This felt nice. After spending a lot of time in the cold waters of salt water, this is what he needed. His stomach was bothering him. What was wrong? He felt nauseous.
He was so tired, he could fall asleep like this. All thoughts of Heath seemed to just disappear like the water going down the drain. Suddenly, he heard some commotion out in his room. What was that? He thought. Another noise was made, louder this time. What? Before Kip could open the shower curtain, Heath bludgeoned himself through the bathroom door and towards Kip. “Aghhh!!!” Kip yelled as Heath vomited all over Kip and fell onto the shower floor, where he continued to vomit all over Kip’s feet. Kip just looked down at Heath in disgust and a rage in his eyes.
Collins Manor
Parker sat on the couch reading the latest ratings for her radio show. It was a great success and she knew that there was nowhere to go but up. She heard the front door open, but stayed in the living room. However, to her surprise, in walked Doug. “My my Doug, first cheating now trespassing? What will God say to you at the pearly white gates?”
Doug smiled. "Don't worry, it won't be God I'll be seeing.“
Parker stood up and crossed her arms. "Well if you don't leave soon your afterlife could come sooner than never."
Where’s Kimberly?”
Parker rolled her eyes. Doug was not one of her favorite people, but she tolerated him. He is my ex-brother-in-law, she reminded herself. “She’s out.”
“I thought so. Foster…Ken Foster,” murmured Doug. “Where’d they go?”
“Somewhere.” Parker stated. She wanted to be left alone and the presence of even a familiar intruder disturbed her. “Why do you even care? You and Kim are divorced.”
“Thank you for reminding me of my past. So you have no clue where she is?”
“No.” Parker snapped. “If you don’t mind, I have to get going to work soon. Call her cell if it’s that important.”
Doug, knowing Parker was not the best informant, shook his head. He started for the door, when Parker stopped him. “Hey, Doug. I know you probably still care for my sister and all considering your past, but she’s moved on. You should do the same. Clinging to the past is so passé.”
Without looking at Parker, Doug thought for the right words. “You’ve probably never been in love, Parker. Jumping from one man to another must be tough, but when you’ve loved someone as much as I love Kimberly those feelings never die.” Doug left the manor as Parker digested his lingering words.
What a tool, she thought. Jumping from one man to another? He doesn't have any right to talk. How her sister could ever get involved in a two-timing slime ball like Doug was something Parker wondered all the time.
However, within mere seconds, her mind was on the one love of her life: Her show.
Lanes' Restaurant
"Thank you." Kimberly smiled as Ken pulled out her chair for her. She sat down and he helped her push her chair in.
"I hope this is ok. I just got into town today and this was the name of a resaturant the guy at the hotel gave me."
"It's great." Kimberly replied as Ken took his seat across from her. "I actually love this place. They have the best chocolate mousse. Not that I really need it."
"Oh hush. Tonight's your night. You get whatever you want." Ken smiled.
Kimberly let a little giggle and stared at Ken. He came to Seattle for her she realized. Parker was right. She should feel pretty special. Not many guys would do that. Since Ken surprised her earlier Kimberly had felt like she was ten feet tall. She hadn't felt that way in a long time.
"Champagne ma'me?" A voice interrupted her thoughts. Kimberly has been so engorged in her thoughts she hadn't even noticed the waiter standing above her with a champagne bottle. "Oh, yes please." The waiter smiled and began to pour the sparkling wine into her fluke.
"So your sister seems quite the character." Ken began suddenly.
"Parker. Oh yes," Kimberly nodded. "She is an interesting girl. Very independent. She just got her own radio show on a local radio station. She couldn't be happier. Her life is her work and that's all. She's single and very much a female casanova. She loves to play the field. I really think she'll be single for the rest of her life."
"Mmm. Interesting. Completely opposite from my sister. You've met her. Very naive. A girly girl so to speak. But to each his own I guess. I can't wait to meet the rest of your family."
"Oh you'll meet them. They will love I know they will. In fact I want you to come with me to work on Monday. I want you to meet daddy. I think we can get you a job."
Ken looked pleased. "Really? That would be great, but if he's full I completely understand. I don't want any favors or special handouts."
"Oh it won't. He looked at your work at your firm in Miami and was really impressed. I haven't told him about us yet."
Ken looked grim. "Oh." "He will like you though I know he will. We're a lot alike." Kimberly reassurred Ken.
Ken smiled. "Great. I can't wait to meet him."
Kimberly nodded. "So how is Justine?" "She's great. She left her husband. Living with mom and dad now."
"Great. Tell her I said hi next time you talk to her." "I will. Hopefully I'll talk to her soon."
Kimberly frownned and cocked her head to the side. There was something in the tone of his voice. "Something wrong?"
"Well," Ken looked nervous. "I kind of just up and left Miami. Without telling anyone. I just packed my suitcases and left town. It wasn't like me at all."
Kimberly was shocked to hear this. "You just left? Not telling your family or anything?" "I left my family a note. I haven't heard from them all day."
Kimberly placed her hands on her lap. "Ken, you shouldn't have done that. You can't lose your family. You love them too much."
Ken reached across the table and placed his palms in front of Kimberly, silently asking for her hand. She slowly put her hands on to his. He squeezed them.
"Kimberly I had a great life. I always had a great life. Loving family and friends. A very successfull career. I couldn't complain. There was something missing though. I didn't know what it was. I couldn't figure it out. Then I met you and I realized what it was. Just those few days we spent together in Miami and I realized that I was in the best place I had ever been in my entire life. You did that. I couldn't let that go. I had to come here and be with you."
Kimberly was smiling so big, her face began to hurt. "Ken. No one has every said anything like that to me. Do you know how special that makes me feel?"
"You are special. You deserve nothing but happiness the rest of your life." Ken said softly.
"Thank you Ken. That means a lot to me."
"Are we ready to order?" The waiter interrupted them.
"We probably need a few more minutes." Ken said looking over at Kimberly, asking if it was ok with his eyes.
She nodded, wiped her eyes and opened the menu. Wow!
Elise's Apartment
"I, um, I, uh, I was just looking around. I'm sorry, I didn't know you didn't want me in here." A stunned Courtney replied.
Elise just stood there looked down at the floor, as if trying to compose herself. "Look," She said blankly, "If your going to move in here, there's just one thing that needs to be known. You have your space and I have my space. Unless I say it's ok, I really don't want you in here and I, in return, will stay out of your room."
Courtney gave an awkward smile. "That sounds great."
"I'm sorry I lashed out like that, it's just that I'm big on that. I overreacted and I apologize. I shouldn't have handled it like that."
Courtney shrugged her shoulders. "Hey look it is no problem at all. I understand privacy. We'll just pretend that never happened."
Elise smiled grimly, "Thanks."
"So, shall we?" Courtney asked walking out into the hallway towards the living room. Elise followed her, turning off the light and shutting the door to her bedroom.
"Well have I seen everything?" Courtney asked.
"Yes I believe you have. So, thoughts?"
Courtney looked around the room and then she thought about the outburst Elise just had. What was wrong with her? Oh well, maybe it was nothing.
"Well," Courtney replied. "When can I move in?"
Elise jumped up, "Oh yeah!" Elise smiled and laughed surprised Courtney with a huge hug. "I'm so excited." She said breaking away from the hug.
"Just wait," Elise said. "We are going to get along great and have the best time!"
Mystique Cruise Ship
“HAHAHA!!!” Laughter erupted out of Kip’s mouth Heath had just finished telling him a story about him in high school. “That’s really funny Heath. I can’t believe you would actually say that.”
“Believe it, it happened. Wish it didn’t, but it did.” Heath replied. He grabbed his stomach all of the sudden. “Oh man, I am feeling nauseous again. I think I have to go.” Heath ripped the blanket off him and rushed to the bathroom.
“Hey, hurry up! I am feeling another wave of nausea rapidly approaching.” Kip yelled out as he ran.
Things were going very well, Kip thought, much, much better than before. Well, much, much better than the entire trip actually. When Heath vomited on Kip's feet, Kip threw a fit, throwing things and yelling at the top of lungs all over the place. Kip immediately took another shower, washing all the vile vomit off his body. The whole time, Heath had been throwing up in the toilet only three feet away from him!
When Kip got out of the shower, he was still yelling at Heath. But then he saw that Heath was really pale, sweaty, and shaky. Heath was really sick. So Kip decided to be nice and call the cruise doctor. The doctor said Heath had food poisoning and would be better the next day. Kip realized he had eaten at the same place Heath had eaten and right when the cruise doctor was about to leave, Kip began to get sick.
So here they were, the two of them, sick and stuck in bed on their last night of the cruise. For about an hour, neither said anything to each other. In fact, they argued for a while about which movie to watch. Well into the second hour of the movie, Heath apologized for vomiting on Kip and Kip accepted. The two started talking and were actually civil to each other.
Eventually, Heath apologized for everything else including the rudeness and the practical joke on the beach. Kip reluctantly accepted his apology, even though he knew shouldn’t. But Kip, being the nice person he is, decided to give Heath a chance.
Three to four hours later, he was really glad he did. They found out they actually had a lot in common with each other and got along really well. They’d been laughing about old memories and telling each other stories about their past. They were actually starting to become friends.
Suddenly, Kip heard the toilet flush and the sink come on. A few seconds later, he heard the bathroom door fly open and Heath walk painfully back to his bed. “Feel better?” Kip asked.
“Yes, much better. Thank you.” Heath said.
“Why didn’t we get along when we first met?” Kip asked.
“I am not sure. I think cause we were both pissed we didn’t get rooms of our own.” Heath replied. “I mean, that’s my reason.”
“Yeah, that was mine too.” Kip agreed, nodding his head. “Wow, that really sucks. We could have had a great time this whole time instead of at each other’s throats. I mean my vacation has been pretty bad because of this.”
“Yeah, same here. Not the relaxation I was hoping for. But your right, I mean it is a pretty stupid reason to not get along.” Heath said.
“Yeah it is.” Kip paused before he asked his next question. “So Heath, you never told me where you’re from. Are you from Seattle?”
“Nope.” Heath replied.
“So where?” Kip asked again.
“California.” Heath told him.
He wanted to know more. “Well, what about your parents? Where do they live?”
“California, but they travel a lot. They are never together though. Still married, just kind of seperated.” Heath replied. He shifted around underneath his blanket.
“Hey, I hope I’m not getting too personal or anything.
“Nah, its cool.” Heath said coolly. “Sometimes I wish they would just get a divorce. Their marriage has split the family apart. It almost seems as if their divorce would bring us back together.
Kip frowned. “Is that why you left home?”
“Sorta. I just wanted to leave. So I have been doing a little traveling since I graduated high school. I kind of want to find somewhere and settle down for a little bit.”
Kip turned his head towards Heath and raised his eyebrows. “Are you planning on staying in Seattle?”
Heath shrugged. “I don’t know. I was thinking about it. From what you’ve been telling me, it sounds nice. I like the city itself.”
"Seattle is such a great city. One of the best, in my opinion. If you stay, we should hang out. I can show you around. Maybe we could even be friends.”
“I thought we already were friends.” Heath said.
Kip smiled. “Oh well, yeah of course.”
“Yeah, Seattle…mmm.” Heath thought and nodded. “I’d have to see though. See about things and how they are.” He sneezed.
“Bless you.” Kip offered.
“Thanks.” Heath said, calmly.
Kip wondered what things he was talking about. It was actually kind of shady in a way. Kip wanted to ask him what things he was talking about.
He turned his head toward Heath and opened his mouth to speak but realized Heath's eyes were closing, about to shut permeanatley for the night.
“Goodnight Kip.” Heath managed to say before fully closing his eyes.
“Uhh, goodnight Heath.” Kip said, still staring at Heath, wondering what was going on in that mind of his.
Mystique Cruise Ship
“Young lady, before you know it, your life will change forever. It will change in ways you’ve never dreamed. Everything you know and love will come crashing down around you…everything…everything…everything…”
The words reverberated through April’s head as she sat up with a jolt. Cold sweat seeped down her forehead. She tried to catch her breath, but the stark reality of the dream haunted her.
The clock next to her bed read 3:54AM as Danny slept soundly. He’d been so supportive of her all day and waking him up now would be a bit excessive.
April got out of bed as she walked to the portal. She gazed over the ocean and into the bleakness of night. For some reason there was something true in the psychic’s words…something that made her very uneasy every time she thought about it. But what, she wondered. It was a question she asked herself until the sun began to rise.
